CustomWeather celebrates 20 years of excellence and innovation by offering a monthly reflection upon its significant accomplishments and milestones over the past 2 decades.
In 2009, CustomWeather was one of the first weather companies to introduce its Map Tile server, offering a brand new way to view maps. The “Quadkey” map structure had just become available, enabling users to zoom down to street level – a brand new concept in the world of weather with wide appeal, particularly for Doppler Radar. However, at the time, the existing standard map tile interfaces from BING and Google did not have a means for animating map tiles. Animation is a critical component for maps displaying data such as Doppler radar and satellite imagery. CustomWeather rose to the challenge, creating its own mechanism for animating map tiles. This was particularly challenging with no utilities in place, but thanks to the skilled staff that CustomWeather is known for, CustomWeather became the first weather company to have successfully animated Doppler Radar available on map tiles.
In that same period of 2009, CustomWeather also experimented with early versions of Cloud Computing (EC2 at Amazon Web Services) to produce the desired map tiles across server farms. This was a new concept at the time, which enabled the rapid generation of CustomWeather’s extensive map tile suite.
